Tri-Band

A phone that is capable of operating on three of the four GSM frequency bands can be operable in most parts of the world. In Europe, tri-band is used to refer to the following 3 frequencies:

  • 900 MHz (Europe)
  • 1800 MHz (Europe, Asia-Pacific and Australia)
  • 1900 MHz (the Americas)

In North America, tri-band means:

  • 800/850 MHz
  • 1800 MHz
  • 1900 MHz

This means that a North American tri-band phone cannot be used in the UK to connect to the 900 MHz frequency used by Vodafone and O2.
