Mobile Attenuation

The power of an analogue mobile phone can be adjusted (attenuated) dynamically to 1 of 7 discrete power levels. This is done to keep the transmit power at a minimum to increase the talk usage time. In addition, mobile attenuation is used so that when a mobile comes closer to a base receiver its power is reduced to prevent the chance of interfering with other mobiles operating on the same voice channel in another cell (known as co-channel interference).
