MExE

Acronym for: Mobile Station Application Execution Environment (GSM 02.57).

A framework that is used to ensure a predictable environment for third-party applications in UMTS or GSM handsets (the Mobile Station). MExE does this by defining different technology requirements called classmarks:

  • classmark 1 is based on WAP
  • classmark 2 is based on PersonalJava and JavaPhone
  • classmark 3 is based on J2ME CLDC and MIDP

A handset can support any number of classmarks.

MExE specifies additional requirements for all classmarks, for example a user profile, capability and content negotiation, a security environment, management of services, user interface personalisation, and virtual home environment.
