Infrared Data Association (IrDA)
The standard for transmitting data through non-visible infrared waves. IrDA defines communications protocol standards for short range data exchange between two devices up to 1 or 2 metres apart (20 to 30 cm for low-power devices) over infrared light waves. IrDA devices typically have throughput of up to either 115.2 Kbps or 4 Mbps.
Infrared compatible phones allow cable free data transmission to another device with IR. This can be particularly useful when used in conjunction with a handheld or laptop PC. However, unlike Bluetooth, a direct line-of-sight is required between the two devices before data transmission can commence. Phones with infrared cannot connect handheld PC's or laptops to the Internet unless it also has a built-in modem.
