Handoff

The transfer of a call from one cell site to another as during an ongoing call. This can happen if:

• One base station is full, and the connection can be transferred to another nearby base station (termed intra-cell handoff).
• The phone has moved out of range from one cell site (base station) and can get a better radio link from a stronger transmitter (another base station). This is known as inter-cell handoff.
