EDGE
Acronym for: Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution. Also known as Enhanced GPRS (E-GPRS).
A digital mobile technology that allows for improved data transfer consistency and increased data transfer rate in GSM and TDMA networks. EDGE was developed to enable the transmission of large amounts of data at a high speed of 384 kilobits per second. However, most EDGE networks are configured to only allow up to 135 Kbps data transfer.
With EDGE, high-speed data applications, such as video services and other multimedia services, can be availed with fast data capacity. EDGE is the nearest competitor to 3G services, making it ideal for those operators without a 3G license or countries that are without dedicated 3G spectrum.
