Compandor
A combination of a compressor at the transmitter and an expander at the receiver. The transmitter encodes (compresses) the dynamics of the audio to reduce the dynamic range of the transmitted signal, whilst the receiver decodes (expands) this signal to the original dynamic range.
Compandor is used in communications systems to improve signal-to-noise as a result of reduced transmitted dynamic range.
