ActiveX
A loosely defined set of technologies developed by Microsoft. It is an outgrowth of two other Microsoft technologies known as COM (Component Object Model) and OLE (Object Linking and Embedding). However, when speaking of ActiveX, the majority of people are actually referring to ActiveX controls, which represent a specific way of implementing these technologies.
