Second generation wireless telephone technologies that use digital encoding, rather than analogue radio signals. 2G protocols include GSM (used in Europe), CDMA and D-AMPS (TDMA), and offer data, fax and SMS as well as supporting high bit rate voice and limited data communications. Most 2G protocols offer different levels of encryption.
